Dearest Morina, we have known you from school days as a happy go lucky teenager. You were our daughter’s best friend. Whenever you visited our home your sweet smile brought sunshine to everyone around. Our daughter was made happy by your company and friendship. We are deeply saddened that this happened to such a kind hearted, brilliant and beautiful girl before her time. We prayed for you to get better and for normalcy to return. Perhaps the angels loved you more and wanted you to be with them. We realise this devastating separation must be so hard for your family, friends including our own daughter to bear. May the angels in heaven look after you and keep you well and happy without any pain. With love, Manisha aunty and Mahanama uncle

To our darling princess, Loving Morina,

It is very difficult to think how we spent the past few weeks, while you were bravely facing your life. The word “struggling” should apply only for your loved ones. Because you were not struggling as you’ve explained to your parents and your nearest. You were very wise, clever and knowledgeable to understand how you had to face the future. You had courage and developed the strength day by day to fight against the disease. You strived to continue to maintain your daily routines: you drove your vehicle, continued to work at your job at the high scale, always with your usual smile, setting a great example to everyone as to how to fight this bravely. Even with all this you always had time to spend with your family and with the small ones of your brothers and family members.

You were always looking out for others and looking to help anyone in need. When you have come to know about the recent shortage of drugs at the Maharagama Cancer Hospital (SL) you have asked your parents how you can help from there. When we shared the information with you, you knew a lot about these meds, and how urgently patients needed these drugs and didn’t hesitate to spend lakhs for the project. Deepa aunty and I were fortunate to have been able to speak with you a few weeks ago, and even then you were thinking of others, asking us to take care of ourselves.

When I think about you, we go far back in years. I still remember the day I visited St. Michael’s nursing home, the day you were born. I came home and said “japan kellek wagei”. You were like a picture from the fairytale books. You never lost that beauty even to your last day - and that is because you were genuinely beautiful inside out. You were about 5 years old when your parents came to live in Colombo and we used to see you regularly and to see you growing up day by day. We are so proud of the young lady you became and all that you achieved. From childhood one of your main interests was reading, and we cherish our memories of our visit to the vessel that docked with a massive bookstore where you spent time with a lot of interest.

We have so much to learn from the way you lived your life; as you have asked your parents “don’t think about the past, don’t worry about the future, but think about this moment and act accordingly.” You never hesitated to help others in need, and always encouraged others to do the same. You were an inspiration for everyone.
We will not say ‘goodbye’ as we will always be with you and cherish all your memories.

Rest in Peace darling Morina, may you have a peaceful journey in the safe hands of the lord.

I am still in complete disbelief that you are gone Mora aka “Su-Li.” When I first met you in 1997, when we were freshers at Colombo Uni, the first impressions I had of you were of a shy, beautiful young woman. You remained beautiful right throughout, both inside and out, but we started noticing more amazing qualities in you like your deeply personal nature and how you knew what you wanted from life. I remember very clearly an incident that defined you for me. It was pouring rain during a monsoon day. Our group was mostly Colombo-school or Kandy school kids known as the "Ala Gansiya" (a derogatory term meaning we were comfortably brought-up kids who were also disruptors of ragging, which we embraced wholeheartedly as an accolade, even celebrating it with a specially designed blue baseball cap with a yellow potato man giving the thumbs up!). On this monsoon day, you wanted to dance in the rain. Cats and dogs were falling from the heavens, and we all said, "Hell no!" But you went alone and danced in the rain! You always did what you thought was right no matter what others thought or did. I admired that young girl. I admired you for knowing what you wanted when many of us were largely clueless about life. You were the first of many things too. You were the first to get published, you were the first to start a Uni relationship, you were the first to go abroad for graduate studies, and now, unfortunately, you are the first to go on this sad and unexpected journey. I am sure you didn't plan for the latter, nor did any of us for that matter, which is what is devastating about it. To see so much life, with such a will to enjoy life be extinguished so soon is excruciating. I always assumed that all our Colombo Uni batch mates would die old. That we would have reunions particularly in our old age, when our kids are all grown, and our calendars were free once more of work. I still think we will – at least some of us. But alas! You will not be there! No certainty that I will either. Such is life. But, in leaving us so unexpectedly, you have left us another life lesson Mora – that we should never wait for the next promotion, or for our kids to grow up to reach out to our friends. And that is exactly what you did in 2019, when you reached out to me on one of my visits to Melbourne, so that we could hang out, break bread again and walk down memory lane, reminiscing our time together at Colombo Uni, which to me were the best days of my young adult life! In the end, what remains is our memories. And my memories of you will not be of your suffering in your last days. It will be of that girl dancing in the rain! That girl who had such a beautiful smile and was adored by everyone she touched! This is what I will remember of you. And I also know, and this might sound so cliché, that this will not be the end. It cannot be. So, until next time More aka Su-Li, Rest in Peace my dear friend! I shall see you on the other side!

Despite only meeting once in my adult life, a cousin has never felt so welcoming to, proud and loving of me, and our whole family, as Morina did. I regret never having had a chance to be closer, to share in her knowledge and wisdom, learn of her experiences and travels; to pick her brain and follow her guidance. I hope I achieve the goals I told her I had; I’m sure she’ll be cheering on from heaven, and keeping all whom she loved and who loved her, safe and well. In these hard times, I can only pray that God gives his guidance to you all, as you mourn this loss. But also, that as soon as He deems it ready, he allows and helps you to celebrate, to reflect and reminisce on good times and fond memories.

Much love ❤️

Aunty and uncle, Monto, Monro and your beautiful families,
Your beloved Morina is gone too soon but she has moved ahead to prepare heaven for when her family joins her. She lived a remarkable life and her memory will be treasured by everyone she touched. May God comfort each of you quietly at this sad time and give you strength to keep going after such a devastating loss.
Love always,
Jo, Tahli and Nici.

Dear Mori,
Can't believe you are no longer with us. Yet I know your spirt lives with us. Your greatest gift to me is our childhood memories that I will always treasure. Going to Bishops' College together from kindergarten, I always followed you. Being one grade above me you showed me the ropes. You would win the Bishop of Colombo divinity prize one year and the next year I won it following you!
You were a great cousin, mentor and one of my best friends! You were the one who influenced me to read anything we could get our hands on at the Bishop's College's library or British Council...
I loved our weekends where both our families would meet at Loku amma's house. Her back yard was our playground. Still remember the tree which was our club house for the Famous Five or Secret Seven adventures.
Or the times we spent playing doll house except our babies were your brothers:), the times we had to play cricket with Monto and Monro...Our trips to Yala that was filled with adventures and memories that brings a smile even on a rainy day.
So I know you will live in our hearts minds and in our spirit, when we think back to all the memories you left with us or when we look at your nieces and nephews who have inherited your smile, spirit and character!
May the Holy Spirit guide you to be with the angels and watch over all of us!
Till we meet again in heaven Cousin! Love you and miss you...❤ Dina

Dear Auntie Mori,

I want to offer you my heartfelt thanks for all the memories I have of our time together.

You were my second mum and I can never thank you enough for this. You were always the very best second mum that you could possibly be.

You deeply influenced me throughout my life. This encouraged me to achieve and do the very best possible. I always wanted to make you proud of all my achievements.

You were an excellent role model, the very best that I could ask for. You meant the world to me and I love you forever.

It has been very hard for me to lose you from my life. There is now a big hole which will be difficult to fill. I know you are now at rest and free from pain; you are in a far better place – you are now with God.

I love you.

It is with much sadness that we condole the passing away of our dear Morina duwa, whom we nurtured from her birth. It was a great pleasure to see the progressive steps of her dedication to worship the Almighty and leading to an illustrious career in the field of International Relations.
She was a great example of our extended family.

We will miss you dearly duwa, but you are in a better place with the Almighty! Love you always and know that we will be praying the rosary daily for you!

Goodbye is not forever, and goodbyes are not the end. They simply mean we’ll miss you until we meet again.
Morina... I wanted to Thank You from the bottom of my heart for always being there for my sister Sheshi thru thick and thin. To Sheshi you are her own Akki and friend not a sister in law. I may not be able to fill in the void you left behind but I will do my best to be a good sister to your beloved brothers.
Those we love don’t go away. They walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard, but always near. Still loved, still missed, and forever dear.
